BIS Hallmark: Authenticity of Trust
Gold has held unparalleled significance in the world of wealth and luxury. It’s not only a means to
adorn bodies but, since ancient times, served as a form of security and mode of investment. In the
form of ornaments, it takes the shape of emotional connection and memories, often passed down by
generations or as a symbol of a new beginning. Yet buyers are frequently concerned about the purity
of gold, particularly in the gold jewelry and ornaments market.
What is BIS Hallmark?
In 2002, the Standing Committee on Gold and Precious Metal at the Reserve Bank of India
designated the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) as the sole agency to operate the Hallmarking
Scheme for gold and silver jewelry with the aim of consumer protection and market regulation of
gold jewelry. This organization's certification, known as the BIS Hallmark Certificate, attests to a
gold jewel's compliance with BIS's requirements.
Elements of BIS Hallmark
There are four parts or marks that make up the BIS Hallmark for gold goods; the standard logo, the
fineness mark (916), the assaying and hallmarking center’s logo, and the jeweler’s logo. Your gold
is in compliance with the purity requirements established by the Bureau of Indian requirements if it
bears these marks.
(1) The standard mark is a triangular-shaped mark indicating that the purity of that gold item is
verified in one of the BIS-licensed labs. It is identical in all hallmarked jewelry.
(2) The purity grade (or mark) certifies the karat value of the ornament denoted as Karat (KT or K),
and the fineness mark refers to the percentage of pure gold against the total alloy. For instance,
a ring craved with 22 karat gold will have 91.6 % pure gold and will be marked as 22K916.
Likewise, a ring with 18k and 14k gold will be marked as 18K750 and 14K585, respectively.
(3) To track any irregularities, the third mark on hallmarked objects is the logo of a third-party
assayer or hallmarking center that BIS laboratories or institutes have approved to verify the
purity of the gold and apply the mark.
(4) Finally, jewelers and manufacturers may emboss unique logos on their gold items.
The scheme aligns with international standards adopted under the International Convention on
Marking of Precious Metals, enforcing the Vienna Convention’s criteria and demonstrating
confidence in operating hallmarking schemes in India.
Benefits of BIS Hallmarking
Over the years, BIS Hallmark has changed the way Indian jewelry market. A comprehensive
examination is crucial to determining the purity of gold. A minor variation in the purity of gold can
significantly change the value of the jewelry. Hallmark is a good solution to this problem.
‣ The primary function of BIS Hallmarking is consumer protection against fraudulent
practices, such as selling adulterated or low-purity gold at higher prices.
‣ It assures consumers of the purity of the gold they are buying. It denotes the proportion of
gold content in the jewelry expressed in Karats.
‣ Consumers can make well-informed decisions based on transparency about the purity of
gold jewelry. This transparency facilitates fair pricing and prevents overcharging for lower20
purity gold. BIS Hallmarking guarantees that consumers get what they pay for by
establishing a benchmark for the caliber of gold jewelry and ornament in the Indian market.
‣ Customers are reassured of the purity and quality of hallmarked gold, which builds trust. It
removes any uncertainty regarding authenticity and lowers the possibility of buying
substandard gold. Consumers can now rely on BIS Hallmarking when dealing with a new
seller, resulting in a wider variety and choice. It has successfully replaced trust with
authenticity.
‣ Consumers can now trust upcoming niche jewelry brands because BIS Hallmarked jewelry
is a testament to purity.
‣ Hallmarking has also enhanced the investment value of gold because hallmarking serves as
a guaranteed purity and quality of the jewelry. At the time of liquidation, BIS Hallmark is an
authentication tool for both parties, making it convenient to sell your jewelry at the right
prices. As compared to non-hallmarked jewelry, hallmarked jewelry holds a higher resale
value. In the gold jewelry industry, Hallmark is synonymous with confidence and trust. Both
buyers and sellers equally accept it.
The system effectively ensures consumer protection, verifies gold purity, and offers transparency
for all parties.
